What does childhood mean to me?
Sandpits, mud pies, dandilion clocks,
A time which is stress and worry free
Teddy bear’s picnics and party frocks
and getting over the chicken pox
Endless summers on the beach
or games of tag at the local park
love and loss far out of reach
Imagination easily sparked
everything colourful, nothing stark
Party games like musical chairs
skipping and hopscotch and nursery rhymes
winning a goldfish at the local fair
ducks to feed and trees to climb
the world turning slowly, a magical time.
This poem was inspired by this week’s theme for The Theme Game as proposed by Jocelyn at The Reading Residence and Iona at Red Peffer.
Great poem. I’m glad you were able to find an inspiration in the theme and share with us.
Thanks Denise – its pretty amateurish but I just felt like ‘childhood’ was too big a theme to narrow down and it worked to write about it as a poem!
Fab little ditty Sam! Totally captures the magic of childhood xx #ThemeGame
Thanks hon!
Ooh I loved this, made me think of so many similar experiences. Thanks for sharing with #TheThemeGame
Thanks for hosting Iona!
This is just beautiful, and sums up childhood so well. I love that photo of your boys, too. Thanks for sharing with #TheThemeGame x
Thanks Jocelyn!
you’ve described a childhood that we can all relate to I think, although I waited until I was 39 to catch chickenpox – not to be recommended! #TheThemeGame
Gargh!!!
What fab little poem! Sums it all up very nicely 🙂
Ah thanks! I didn’t want to limit my post to one aspect of childhood so a poem seemed like the way to go!
What a lovely poem, Sam! Awww, goldfish at the funfair… Reminds me of my childhood! x Mel
Thanks Mel! Kind of thrown together – not going to win any literary prizes or anything but just a few random memories of what can make childhood special.
